Gareth Barry has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2012 campaign through injury, and will be replaced by Phil Jagielka.
The Manchester City midfielder picked up a muscle tear in his lower abdomen in the 1-0 friendly victory over Norway on Saturday, and a scan on Monday confirmed that Barry would not be able to travel to Poland and Ukraine.
Roy Hodgson has expressed his disappointment for the experienced midfielder.
“I’m very disappointed to lose Gareth, not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years,” the Three Lions boss told the official FA website.
“I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but I’m sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros. I wish him a speedy recovery.”
Meanwhile, Scott Parker has confirmed that he is fit and ready to play this summer, despite concerns that he was also carrying an injury.
“It was my first game for a while and I’m pleased I’ve come through it. It felt good and I felt fine,” Sky Sports quote the Tottenham man as saying.
“I had trained for the previous three days and it’s the first time I trained for a while and it felt okay. I was relieved.
“It probably couldn’t have come at a worse time really, the injury, for Tottenham as well, coming at the back end of the season after doing so well.
“Obviously I wanted to be part of that and to miss out left the fear I might miss out on the Euros as well. I am glad things have cleared up a little bit and I am ready to go,” he concluded.
