The tale of Eddie Nketiah is a strange one.
Leeds did so much in order to bring him to the club last summer. Victor Orta led a Dragons’ Den-style presentation in front of Arsenal officials as they landed the 20-year-old on loan during transfer deadline day.
However, was it worth the meticulous hassle that went into acquiring him? Arguably not.
Virtually impossible: Can you name the year all of these Leeds flops arrived at Elland Road?
Patrick Bamford has proven himself now in the Leeds side, taking his tally to nine goals for the campaign after a recent goal glut.
The former Middlesbrough man has vindicated the faith Marcelo Bielsa has shown in him but with Bamford’s form taking a turn for the better, it’s come as bad news for Nketiah.
The Arsenal loanee has recently been out with an injury, something that ruined his chance of gaining a starting spot as his main competition ended a wretched run of ten games without finding the net.
A discussion has surrounded Nketiah’s future in recent weeks. Will he or won’t he return to the Gunners in January? It’s a difficult situation to work out but The Sun suggest he could actually stay.
However, one photo from Leeds’ 3-3 draw with Cardiff last Saturday rather sums up his career in west Yorkshire.
The photo above shows the youngster with his hands on his head, looking dejected as he rues a missed opportunity for Leeds.
It paints a sorry image as he cuts a frustrated figure, annoyed both at his team’s fortunes on the day and ruing his own in recent times.
Nketiah is used to finding the back of the net. He scored nine times in ten games in Premier League 2 last term and has five this season in all competitions despite rarely getting a look in. On that evidence, he should be playing more. It’s unfortunate he doesn’t fit the team’s style of play.
He’s already expressed his annoyance at being on the bench so regularly and another game without a goal is unlikely to have helped his cause, especially for someone who is still yet to start in the league.
For the best of his career, he might well have to seek football elsewhere when the winter window opens.
In other news, one Leeds man has recently shown why promotion is anything but assured…
