[ad_pod ]It’s ironic, isn’t it? The man with possibly one of the most conservative celebrations in the history of football, Alan Shearer, is the very individual who we saw celebrate more than any.Shearer retired from the game in 2006. That means almost 14 years have passed since we’ve seen the iconic hand of destiny (unofficially titled by ourselves) pointed to the sky like a dodgems power mast. But it’s not Shearer’s perfectly formed obtuse angle that impresses us the most; oh no. It’s the fact that his insurmountable record of 260 Premier League goals remains untouched and will likely stay that way for the foreseeable future (unless Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero scored 97 more). For those who don’t wake up thinking about Shearer (which is probably most people), Match of the Day recently reminded us that the Englishman joined his boyhood club, the one he’s arguably best associated with, Newcastle United, on this day in 1996 for a record £15m.
We wonder if he ever closed those hands.
