It’s the fact that his insurmountable record of 260 Premier League goals remains untouched and will likely stay that way for the foreseeable future (unless Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero scored 97 more).For those who don’t wake up thinking about Shearer (which is probably most people), Match of the Day recently reminded us that the Englishman joined his boyhood club, the one he’s arguably best associated with, Newcastle United, on this day in 1996 for a record £15m.

We wonder if he ever closed those hands.
